Let the Light In

Some call it ambiance. Others calling it saving electricity. I call it sitting in the dark for no reason. While some may find it romantic or cost effective to keep the lights down or off, I find it hard to eat or work or do pretty much anything besides sleep when I can’t see. We all want to keep our electric bills in check , especially with summer coming right around the corner; however, there are better ways to keep the light in and the bills down.

Recent decades saw the great popularity of curtains. Thick, heavy, dark curtains that hung from ceiling to the floor. Not only are they very good at blocking out natural light, but often you didn’t want to move them because of the clouds of dust you would create if they were touched. No wonder people had lamps on every table. While it does a lot for a room to have window treatments , there are more environmentally and economically friendly ways of doing it.

One of the first things that you can do after getting rid of old, bulky curtains is invest in some quality window blinds . There are many different styles and designs available to fit your style and budget, from premium wood blinds to basic mini blinds. Blinds are nice because they allow you to adjust how much light comes in to the room, so you can make significant cuts in how much artificial light you use. You can add more style to your windows and blinds with a sheer or lightweight curtain or swag.

Making the most of natural lighting is the best way to compromise being able to see and saving money. There are even energy efficient shades that cut down on how much heat is let in. When it comes to redecorating your windows, you don’t have to sacrifice the look for something that will save you money in the long run. Of course, if you find sitting in the dark romantic you’ll just have to keep the blinds closed.
