Orgins of Stamps

I remember first discovering Singapore for my self as a Young child sorting through stamps in my stamp collection. There was an engraved stamp in red showing Queen Elizabeth II on a stamp from Singapore. I thought that was strange since Great Britain was all way round the other side of the world from Singapore. I learned a lot that summer I started collecting stamps. The miniature works of art issued from everywhere in the world and used to send things all over. These stamps featured images of people, buildings, flowers, animals, plants, fish, birds, designs hey commemorated events, places and occurrences. Everything seemed to be documented on a stamp. The origin of the postage stamp is in Great Britain in the mid 1800s a stamp selling for one penny featuring the profile of Queen Victoria  was the first stamp to be issued. Now known as the One Penny Black these stamps had to be cut by hand and glue applied to them as the innovation of perforations and pre gummed stamps was years away. While staying at best singapore hotels there was a convention of stamp collector with an accompanying exhibit of stamps front he beginning to current time. I remembered the stamps i had. Some were printed over in bold words letters or numbers indicating new rulers, regimes and inflationary times. History was played out on these little works of art. A countries rulers could be followed by the changing images on the stamps issued by the country over time Big events, elections and other commemorations are found on stamps. The process of printing began with engraved stamps usually in one color sometime sin in two to more modern offset printing techniques that make full color reproduction on the stamps possible. The stamps chronicled the good and the bad, changes and stanchions and all events in between in the history of the countries issuing them.

When it comes to five-star hotels, Mauritius is a dream come true.  An island off of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a blend of cultures on an island paradise, a place to get away from it all, and a place to learn about an unusual paradise with an unusual history.  Our hotels here have the finest amenities that meet the highest standards in the industry.  You can expect the royal treatment from our well-informed staff, who can answer your questions about local attractions, restaurant recommendations, and Mauritius’ history.  We serve amazingly succulent cuisine, created by world-class chefs who are extremely well-trained in the nuances of contemporary cooking.  There are also superb exercise facilities that have an impressive array of equipment with many extras designed to balance the body and spirit.

All of these specialties in accommodation are designed to ground you in your stay in this magnificent place, and Mauritius really is a tropical heaven.  Culturally and linguistically, it is French, English, Creole, and Indian, with a number of others in the mix, making it a very diverse and interesting place.  As one might expect, there are some fantastic art forms that come from this mix, and one local favorite is the rock band Crossbreed Supersoul.  They have been playing together since 2004, and in that time have quickly become one of the hottest rock bands in Mauritius.  They play straight-up rock, with no frills, focusing on rhythm and intensity of the playing, and emotion in the undertone.

With two albums under their belts, and a third in the works, Crossbreed Supersoul is busy.  They are constantly touring, playing, recording, and trying new things out in their music.  One of the most exciting presences on the island, they are always trying to offer something new to their substantial fan base.  With mixtures of solid classic rock, hints of stadium, and a sprinkle of progressive, their work speaks to a large cross-section of Mauritian culture, and would offer something essential to travelers here as well.

The Sound Installation in Newcastle on the Tyne

One of the most interesting exhibits running this summer is located in Newcastle, England.  Bill Fontana’s sculpture of sound will run through October 2, 2009 in various venues in and around the city.  Northern Rock Foundation Hall just closed the show last Friday.  It will run until August 2, 2009 at Katherine Shears Studio, and then will continue through October 2 in the stairwells of the Baltic Gallery.  This is part of the Summer Tyne series of various art exhibits and live performances.  These are world class events and festivals that are part of the collaboration of Culture 10.  One may find a listing of events running at any given time, at the Newcastle hotel they find accommodations with.

The exhibit features recorded sound of the three bridges over the Tyne, the river itself and acoustic “recordings” of atmosphere taken from the Baltic Gallery and the Sage Gateshead.  The recordings are live, so that each time someone experiences the show, it will be a different experience.  Improvisational Jazz accompanies the atmospheric sounds, the work of Asaf Sirkis on percussion and Tim Garland on saxophone.  These guys are award winning musicians and performers, and are elemental in the entire production.

Fonatana states that this was the first time he received a commission of this nature, and that he had always been drawn to the river and the bridges that criss-cross it.  His collaborators he credits, as their understanding of sound facilitated his creative inspiration and vision.  The title of the show is “Tyne Soundings”.  Just the nature of the water, the expansion joints used in the construction of the bridges, and the sounds of the voices of the people as they cross the bridges, together form a music of nature, of architecture and of human culture.   Live sensors have been placed in the various locations to capture the sound real time.  Sometimes the fog horn of the Souter Lighthouse is included, as well as the sound of an escalator from the Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel.

Fonatana was a student of John Cage, and was perhaps inspired by Cage’s fascination with the sound of everyday life.  He has also presented exhibits at the Tate Museum, the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Museum of Art.  This is an incredible way to experience and to rediscover the sounds of life.  From the nature of a river flowing to the clicks and grinds of mechanical objects.  For anyone visiting the Tyne region this summer, this is one attraction that should not be missed.

The Diverse Festivals of Punjab, India

The Sufi Saints are worshipped and celebrated in the city of Punjab.  Many festivals and fairs are held throughout the city each year, and artistic and religious culture of this Indian city is based on these different saints.  These celebrations offer different glimpses into the multi-faceted culture of the people, through the devotional or religious fairs, to the commercial and industrial.  The religion of the region is Muslim.  Sacred days such as Shab-e-Brat and Muharram are celebrated by many throughout the communities, and pay homage and tribute to the various saints.  These are mainly devotional fairs, with days and nights spent in prayer and performing the ceremonial rituals of the religion.

When a fair is held at one of the shrines, this is usually a day in history in which the particular saint died.  These are very celebratory occasions where the people dance and play music.  The music of these fairs is something that every tourist staying in Punjab hotels should experience.  The music is the traditional folk music of the culture, and is uplifting and spirit enhancing.  One of the largest of these fairs is in honor of the Sufi poet, Syed Waris Shah, one of the most loved poets of the city of Punjab.

The commercial and trade shows are completely different.  Each year there is a festival of sports, competitions and exhibits.  This is the National Horse and Cattle Show is the largest of these kinds of fairs in the country.  The animals compete, sports are played, and the there are many companies selling the various products for livestock and agricultural industries.  The roots are very strong in these region of India, to farming and the rural way of life, and this is celebrated fully during this time.  There are also many craft and art festivals as with many cultures throughout the country, the arts have played a large role in the traditions of the people of India.  This is a great time for those wanting to purchase the colorful material, the incredible sculptures, or the leather and jewelery work of the artisans of Punjab.

Barcelona Electronica: Jaume Muntsant

For travelers looking for the perfect 5-star Barcelona hotels, ours have it all.  With design, service, and hospitality that meet or exceed the industry standards, our hotels are here to make your stay in Barcelona an unforgettable experience.  With incredible cuisine prepared by our world-class chefs, and amazing amenities available to you 24 hours a day, you’ll agree that nothing has been overlooked here.  Our knowledgeable concierge can help to guide you toward events, sights, and sounds that are specific to your interests.

Barcelona has long been one of the truly great world cities.  A powerhouse in finance and entertainment, it is also on the water, and has a long history of trade with other parts of the world.  This means that both goods and ideas flow in and out of the city, and it integrates the things it likes, so that it is constantly evolving, and constantly in flux.  The art scene here tends to fluctuate between experiment and tradition, and youth culture has always fallen toward experiments.  One rather fearless experimenter who gets the attention of the locals is Spanish musician Jaume Muntsant.  Born outside of Barcelona in 1980, this navigator of electronica always has an astounding number of projects going on at any given time.

One of his fascinating projects is a weblog, Oir para creer, which is an eclectic audio log of new developments in the electronica world at large, and with an emphasis on the local.  His myspace page, under his dj name hermético, is a great way to introduce yourself to his sounds.  There is a tendency toward the dark side here, he readily admits, betraying his death metal background.  In 2004, with his friends Sr. Click and daTo, he started a net label, inoQuo, which is an excellent resource for electronic and ambient music lovers to listen to some of the most innovative and evocative music in the world today.  Some have their fingers on the pulse, and some make the pulse, and some do a bit of both.  Sr. Muntsant is obviously both, pushing limits and opening doors in Barcelona’s international scene.
